emiliana torrini - fisherman's woman (2005)

"Home alone and happy / Nothing brings me down"

So opens Emiliana Torrini’s second album, a soft-yet-searing collection of twelve intimate and atmospheric songs that will whisper their way into your bloodstream. Back in 1999, when the singer released the critically acclaimed Love In The Time Of Science, Emiliana came out with a gorgeous, electronic trippoppin’ vision of endless summer and moonlit nights out. Following her departure from One Little Indian, there’s a new introspection, closer to Nick Drake or Jolie Holland than Portishead or Goldfrapp. The 27-year-old singer and writer has nonetheless been busy since Love In The Time Of Science. She moved to Brighton, joined the cast of Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers to perform the enchanting ‘Gollum Song’ wrote and toured with Thievery Corporation, and wrote a Number One Hit for Kylie Minogue in the shape of huge-selling pop smash "Slow."

juan diego flores - bel canto spectacular (2008)

7.17.2008

Bel canto, that most magical of operatic phrases, literally means “beautiful singing”. The peak of opera’s bel canto era came in the first three decades of the 19th century, with singers possessing a range, virtuosity, and expressiveness that quickly became legendary.

Those extraordinary performers were the rock stars of their time, driving audiences mad with enthusiasm in every city where opera was performed. Fortunately for us, bel canto flourishes onstage today thanks in no small part to Juan Diego Flórez.

For the past decade the Peruvian tenor has earned ecstatic critical and public response internationally for a technical prowess and an authoritative style that must surely equal what the public would have heard from the greatest tenors more than 150 years ago. Flórez’s exhilarating vocalism, matched by a magnetic stage presence, has prompted major opera companies to revive many rare works especially for him.

An exclusive Decca artist, Flórez has reached a point in his career where he can invite eminent colleagues to record with him. This type of programme is fairly common in popular music, but seldom, if ever, with opera stars of similar magnitude.

“I decided who I wanted to invite — they’re all friends of mine, and I’ve performed with all of them. I called them up and tried to persuade them. It wasn’t easy to work with everyone’s schedule, and I was lucky that they all could do it!” This “Flórez and Friends” programme of bel canto excerpts gives further proof of Flórez’s supremacy in this repertoire.”

alison moyet - the essential (2001)

This Essential collection, strategically released to remind the world of the musical greatness of Moyet before the release of her fifth solo album in early 2002 (her first in nearly nine years) and also to coincide with her West End stage debut in “Chicago”, once again highlights why Moyet is still one of Britain’s best loved divas. The classic tracks are still on here but compared to her number one 1995 anthology Singles, there are some interesting additions and erasures. “Only You” and “Situation” two of her better known tracks with Vince Clarke (Yazoo), have been dropped in favour of the equally influential “Don’t Go”, but also the rather unfortunate choice of “Winter Kills”. “Our Colander Eyes” is an upbeat taster of forthcoming new material, and “Blue” the bubbly Kirsty MacColl-style theme from BBC TV’s “Playing the Field” is also featured.

The Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli (born 4 June 1966, Rome) is an opera singer and recitalist. She is best-known for her interpretation of the music of Mozart and Rossini, as well as for her performances of lesser-known Baroque and classical music. She is known for having the versatilty to play both soprano and mezzo roles, and is sometimes considered a soprano with a low tessitura. Bartoli's coloratura skill has earned her the title the Queen of Agility.

frou frou - details (2002)

Named after the French word for the rustle of silk, Frou Frou's debut album exudes cool, stylish elegance. Singer Imogene Heap's soft, whispery vocals intone dreamy lyrics of doomed romances and slow recoveries. The songs are penned by Heap and her partner, producer Guy Sigsworth (Bjцrk, Madonna), who manned the board on Heap's 1998 solo album I Megaphone. Even the mighty Brian Eno gets into the act, with a cowriting credit on the soul-bearing "Hear Me Out." In fact, all 11 tracks deal with love and fractured relationships, hauntingly beautiful both in their stark emotional content and the equally sparse arrangements that showcase Heap's ethereal voice, which she uses as a subtle weapon, much like Joni Mitchell circa 1970's Ladies of the Canyon, with the same heart-stopping yet effortless octave leaps.

Bara Basikova is the formerly the front vocals of the Czechoslovakian prog band Stromboli. Mostly her songs are techno-pop but not this album where she "crossed" over to a new music genre. She can belt out the lyrics with amazing power and intensity, and delivers shivers with whispered poetics.
