tuscany a romantic journey (2005)

Violent Viola is a collection which covers an eclectic range of works that feature the viola. Represented are eleven scores from ten composers. They date from the 16th century with two works by John Dowland, through to the 20th century with works from Kodaly and Britten. Three of the compositions were originally scored for violin and piano and have been adapted for the viola and piano. Also included is Apituley’s own brief composition Pizzicato for viola quartet.

Esther Apituley was born in Amsterdam. She started playing the violin at the age of twelve, soon switching to the viola. After graduating from the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory, she took lessons at the Hochschule Für Musik in Berlin. During the early years of her studies, she was also active as a singer and saxophonist in the field of light music. She currently teaches viola at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory.

Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, Jorge Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.

The lovely opener, Ennio & Andrea Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.

The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!

Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.

This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!

Appassionante - Appassionante (2005)

'Spirit Of The Glen - Journey' is the second album for UCJ from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. Partly recorded on the frontlines of a war zone in Basra, this remarkable collection of songs represents true dedication and spirit. A mobile recording unit was used to capture many of the tracks including 'For The Fallen', an emotive poem spoken over a solo piper, recorded on a runway with the hum of Basra in the distance.

Luis Miguel's Romances is part of his series of records of classic Boleros. This time around, he hired Bebu Silvetti as musical director and arranger and Armando Manzanero as artistic director. Those two musicians wrote two new songs to augment the 13 classic love ballads from Argentina, Brazil, France and Mexico, and their impeccable taste, along with Miguel's seductive vocals, make Romances a sensuous, enchanting album.

It won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance at the 1998 awards. The album debuted at #14 on The Billboard 200 chart, and at the time was the highest debut ever for an album on Spanish language. About the lead single "Por Debajo de la Mesa", the composer Armando Manzanero said: "It's the best song I've ever made". This album was also released at the format DVD Audio in 2001.

The bittersweet song by Massimo Ranieri called "Adagio Veneziano" based on Alessandro Marcello's Concerto per oboe used in the movie "Anonimo Veneziano' in 1970. Massimo has recorded 2 versions. The long one (with different lyrics, mosty instrumental) is released in the "Vent'Anni" (1971) album, the short one's whereabouts I'm not concerned.

The short version was performed live at the festival Canzonietta 71, and had a huge success.

The long version was also released on vynil as a single with the song "Io e Te" by Ennio Morricone for the film "Metello", where also Massimo played. Moreover I can't find the lyrics for that version.

The short one represented here is a vynil rip as one may guess.... Please, comment, if anyone knows where can I find this short version on LP or better CD...

Rhodesian-born, Greek-raised, London-schooled, Juilliard-scholarshipped, Maria Callas Prize Winner Mario Frangoulis is a pop singer with operatic training. The voice is a high baritone/low tenor. It's very appealing, and decidedly non-operatic sounding--Bocelli, for example, is a true opera singer compared to Frangoulis. His first CD, Sometimes I Dream, was a smash hit. This one is certain to be as well. There's little here to please the classical music lover--an arrangement, with love-song lyrics, of Verdi's "Va,pensiero" chorus from Nabucco is as close to opera as he comes. But what he has to offer is a type of introspection which he puts across with gentle sincerity, and he is as adept singing in English as he is in Italian, Spanish and Greek. Most of the selections here are slow and pensive, but a spirited duet with Spanish singer Aleyandro Fernandez and "Cu' mme," a duet with the singer Melody, with an infectious beat, stand out from the rest. Years ago, this was the type of album couples slow-danced and made out to--there's no reason why the tradition shouldn't continue. If your tastes run to Josh Groban and Russell Watson, which is to say, pop singers with classical training and amazing suaveness, then you'll find Frangoulis irresistible.

Mario Frangoulis - Follow Your Heart

Forget the age of battling boy bands, the era of dueling young tenors is upon us. Hot on the heels of Josh Groban's dizzyingly successful, Ally McBeal-fueled debut comes this first international release from African-born, Greek-raised tenor Mario Frangoulis. There are some clear parallels between Groban's debut and this Frangoulis release, but some distinctive differences as well. While Groban coated his slick, David Foster-molded pop sense with a veneer of classical respectability, Frangoulis has effectively turned the formula inside out. With similar classical training--but a few crucial years of experience on his American rival--Frangoulis treats the classics reverently but not slavishly, with the title track effectively turning an aria from Puccini's Tosca into romantic Europop. Elsewhere, the international flavor is further expanded by three melody-rich songs ("Hijo de la Luna," "La Luna de Valencia," and "Naturaleza Muerta") by Spanish singer-songwriter Jose Maria Cano and a sing-along-ready take on the 1950s Neapolitan chestnut "Luna Rossa."

Like Groban, Frangoulis and producer Steve Wood also plumb the music of la cinema italiana for inspiration, turning Nicola Piovani's bittersweet Life Is Beautiful theme into the ponderous "Buongiorno Principessa," but faring better with a moody, dramatic take on Rota-Wertmuller's "Canzone Arribiata." The obligatory rock-pop cover here is the flamenco-inflected "Nights in White Satin", with Frangoulis joined in a bilingual duet with original Moody Blue Justin Hayward that's surprisingly effective. Less showy perhaps than Groban's debut, but a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying album overall.

Not a diva in the traditional sense, Lesley Garrett is establishing herself as a kind of musical Michael Barrymore. A comfortable and generous host, she lets young Ramón Vargas shine alongside herself in "Parigi o cara" from La Traviata while Ladysmith Black Mambazo provides an interesting contrast to Garrett on the closing track. Undeniably, Garrett is happiest alone in front of the band, be it the BBC Concert or Grimethorpe Colliery. Among many seamless arrangements are a delightfully schmaltzy version of "La Vie en rose" and the beautiful new Karl Jenkins composition "He Wishes for the Clothes of Heaven." Her take on Handel's "Tornami a vagheggiar" is frank and confident, though lacking in intimacy and ensemble play. "Bel raggio lusinghier" from Rossini's Semiramide is flawless, but Cole Porter's "Night and Day" sure don't swing. Garrett takes her widening audience on a distinctly unrocky road. Making sure she won't have to wait too long for her next gold, she makes the noises we like to hear, and therein lies the secret of her success. (Yngvil V.G.)
