melody gardot - my one and only thrill (2009)

3.30.2009

My One And Only Thrill is an intensely creative milestone, transcending genre distinctions of jazz and blues to offer a haunting personal musical statement that will appeal to all music-lovers. As with her acclaimed live shows, she captures and holds her audience in the palm of her hand. These eleven songs, covering a wide range of emotions are all her own except for an irresistible, Brazilian take on Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It would take a heart of stone to remain unmoved by the poignant title track "My One And Only Thrill".

Three Mo' Tenors (2001)

Starring seasoned tenors Roderick Dixon, Thomas Young, and Victor Trent Cook, Three Mo' Tenors is a theatrically staged concert set taped for public television's Great Performances. A companion to the taped show, the disc features just over an hour of live music from it. The phenomenal showmanship of Dixon, Young, and Trent Cook takes shape in the styles of opera, Broadway, blues, jazz, soul, spirituals, and gospel. The three virtuosos hit high C's with clarity and brilliance; scat with grace and grit; belt, bend and hold a note to beat the band. They move the audience to a state of near-ecstasy performing the traditional "Were You There (When They Crucified My Lord)" and Puccini's glorious "Nessum Dorma." Other standouts include the jazz classic "Twisted," a rollicking version of "Today I Sing the Blues," and the salty "Minnie the Moocher." Boisterous, bold, and bountiful, Three Mo' Tenors is a modern classic. JMRL

roberto alagna - sicilien (2009)

3.27.2009

For the first time, the great French tenor has recorded a repertoire that he could sing every day without ever getting tired of it: "These songs are a part of me".

The first language Alagna spoke, as well as the first one in which he sang, was Sicilian. He's not hiding the fact that The Sicilian is also a search for identity: "I suddenly felt Sicilian while recording this disc, just like I suddenly felt French while singing La Marseillaise (on Bastille Day of 2005 at the Place de la Concorde). This is the disc of a son of Sicilians looking for his roots."

"In this recording", says Roberto Alagna, "I wanted to present the traditional song as the equal of the tango, of jazz or of the bossa nova." To achieve this, he once again called upon Yvan Cassar, who had already produced the album Roberto Alagna sings Luis Mariano, his incursion into the repertoire of operetta. "Who am I to make a disc of traditional Sicilian music?" the producer asked at first. "But the songs are magnificent, the melodies are unbelievably beautiful and I took advantage of Roberto's knowledge of this repertoire to convey it in the most universal way."

Alagna recorded the songs in the studio, surrounded by a few musicians, then Cassar added some extra touches: festive brasses on A lu mircatu, a bamboo flute and oriental percussion for Carrettieri, the flavours of Greece in the 3/4 time of Li Pira, the light, melancholy sound of the mandolin for Si maritau Rosa: taken all together, the musical portrait of a brilliantly colourful and constantly changing Sicily, a Sicily of poetry at times radiant, at others heartrending, but always intoxicated with emotion.

Two of Yvan Cassar's musical heroes were Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota, and he “discovered that they had listened to a great deal of Sicilian music". So, as if to offer an even more overt universality to some of these anonymous Sicilian folk melodies, such as Mi votu, he provided woodwind and strings in the grand tradition of Italian film music.

And how could one resist the atmosphere of the cinema when arranging Parla più piano, the famous love theme from The Godfather, the only song in Italian in the whole album?

irfan - irfan (2007)

Mystical is an apt description of the group's sound. And Irfan means a mystical knowledge.

This Bulgarian band makes use of traditional Balkan instruments like the oud, saz, daf, tapan and ghaida (to name a few) to breathe new life into medieval music.

Beautiful, haunting, spiritual and soothing, Irfan's music is an oasis of calm. Highly recommended for fans of Dead Can Dance, Vas, Niyaz, female vocals, and middle/far eastern music.

opera babes - beyond imagination

Mezzo Karen England and Soprano Rebecca Knight's debut, supported by perceptive and idiomatic accompaniment, is a solid and impressive recording. The instrumentalists play with great boldness and precision and present the classic works as vibrant music to be taken seriously, not just period pieces.
These compositions pose a range of challenges to the singers. England and Knight respond to the arrangements' disarming freshness and originality with a ready and penetrating intelligence. While they muster ample virtuosic agility of lyric warmth as required, it is their dramatic sense that is most compelling. Knight flings herself passionately into the emotional torrents of "Chanson Boheme," while she delivers her own lyrics in the charming "Ode II Joy" from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with a confident fervor. England sings with pure, attractive tone; her voice has maturity, depth and flexibility, and her diction is impeccable. JMRL

Elīna Garanča (born September 16, 1976) is a Latvian mezzo-soprano. Born into a musical family in Riga, Garanča entered the Latvian Academy of Music in 1996 to study singing with Sergej Martinov. She continued her studies in Vienna with Irina Gavrilović and in the United States with Virginia Zeani. Garanča began her professional career at the Südthüringisches Staatstheater in Meiningen and later worked at the Frankfurt Opera. In 1999 she won the Mirjam Helin Singing Competition in Helsinki, Finland.

BEL CANTO (2009)
Elina Garanca follows her exceptional DG debut splash, Aria Cantilena, with bel canto solos and ensembles featuring guest luminaries like Ildebrando d'Arcangelo. Flawless coloratura and a 'one-in-a-million' mezzo (The Independent) make this exciting young artist ideal for this repertoire. Balancing familiar numbers and ensembles with little known treasures by Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini, Elina rides bel canto's vocal acrobatics and spun out melodies through an emotional spectrum to unforgettable effect.

She has captured critical and popular acclaim for her beautiful voice, intelligent musicianship, and compelling stage portrayals. For her debut recording on Deutsche Grammophon, Aria Cantilena, Elina Garanca has selected some of her favorite arias and scenes from current and future stage roles--ranging from the coloratura tour-de-force of Rossini's Cenerentola to the sparkling wit of Offenbach's Grande-Duchesse to the emotional intensity of Charlotte's "Letter Scene" from Massenet's Werther.

hector zazou & swara - house of mirrors (2008)

3.09.2009

Esoteric, eclectic and prolific, the recently deceased French producer/composer Hector Zazou has made his name with tastefully tweaked cross-cultural collaborations such as Les Nouvelles Polyphonies Corses, Sahara Blue, and Songs From The Cold Seas. All of these showcased vocal talent within his trademark atmospheric electronica, but In The House Of Mirrors places Indian and Uzbekistani instrumentalists centre stage, answering, echoing and embellishing their slow, melancholic-sounding improvisations with a beguiling array of effects.
