sarah brightman - a winter symphony (2008)

10.31.2008

After the successful release of her highest chart debuting album, Symphony, Sarah released her first-ever Christmas album for the holiday season on Manhattan/EMI Records on November 4th. A Winter Symphony brings her virtuosity and originality to many of the season's classics. Her angelic voice glides through an array of season favorites, including "Silent Night" and "In the Bleak Midwinter." Her resplendent duet, "Ave Maria," is sung with Fernando Lima, and Mario Frangoulis lends his talent on the new classical piece "Carpe Diem." Also featured are timeless pop tracks, including Abba's famous instrumental song "Arrival," adapted for first time into a vocal piece, and a gorgeous rendition of Neil Diamond's classic, "I've Been this Way Before." Sarah also brings her own elegance to the holiday pop hits, including John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas (War is Over)," "I Believe in Father Christmas" and "I Wish it Could be Christmas Everyday." A Winter Symphony was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Symphonic Orchestra, and a 46-piece choir.

kathleen battle - a portrait (2002)

Amazon.com
This compilation of previous releases is clearly intended to include something for everybody and to offer an overview of Kathleen Battle's wide, varied repertoire. The result is a motley assortment of music sacred and profane, Baroque, classical and romantic, Spanish and American folksongs, and jazz. It is Battle's radiant, impeccably produced voice, which sheds a glow over every note she sings, and her effortless coloratura and serene expressiveness that provide the unifying, and most rewarding, element.
Four new recordings sound just as glorious as those she made years ago. One is the famous aria from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi performed with piano--a strange misfit among all the arias with orchestra. Wynton Marsalis plays Bach and Handel brilliantly, but sounds too loud and prominent. And despite some baroque ornamentation, he plays in a style so different from hers that the two hardly seem to be performing the same piece. The Orchestra of St. Luke's plays beautifully; an anonymous orchestra under Robert Sadin is competent but too matter-of-fact. A mournful, repetitive duet with Jessye Norman against a background of unearthly noises from Vangelis's Mythodea sounds like an angelic plea for mercy.

In the finale of Mahler's Fourth Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic under Lorin Maazel, Battle captures just the right blend of childlike wonder and heavenly bliss. Of the jazz numbers, one by Duke Ellington is lovely, but Dvorák would have been quite surprised by the arrangement of the Largo from his "New World" Symphony. However, the tonality is right, and Battle sings the melody so beautifully that she almost redeems it. --Edith Eisler

lesiem - auracle (2004)

Lesiëm is a German musical project created in 1999 by the producers Sven Meisel and Alex Wende. The project's music combines elements of rock, pop, electronica, new age, enigmatic and ambient music, as well as Gregorian chant and other choral music. It is frequently compared to French project Era and the Norwegian artist Amethystium. Lesiëm's web site makes extensive reference to the group's mystical/spiritual influences.

Lesiëm released its debut album, Mystic, Spirit, Voices, in 2000. When the album was released in the United States in 2002, it climbed to no. 7 on the U.S. Billboard charts. Lesiëm's second album, Chapter 2, was released in 2001 in Europe, and in the U.S.A. in 2003 under the title Illumination.

The first two albums were some sort of prelude for the pop-opera Times, which was Lesiëm's 3rd album (released as Auracle in U.S.A. in 2004). The musicians started their work in March 2002 and finished it in the end of July. The single Caritas (feat. Maggie Reilly and Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin) was presented in December 2002 on the philanthropic TV-show of Jose Carreras "Carreras Gala".

jose cura - boleros (2002)

10.15.2008

This album is the distinctly different from Cura`s "opera albums", very beautiful "pop" voice of opera superstar Jose Cura, served up with heartfelt delivery of the texts by this master of musical story-telling. Each selection is a unique jewel infused with love, or longing, or wistfulness, or gentle humor. The rich baritonial purr of Cura's lower range is like lush velvet through this music, which, contrary to some reviews, is not Argentinian, but mostly out of Central America. The higher reaches in these songs alternate between exquisite softness and a soaring strength of sound that hints at what this singer can offer on the opera stage. The arrangements are beautifully scored, whether with full orchestra, a jazzy combo, or just piano accompaniment. A delightful dozen these are! Sit back, relax, and enjoy them.
